Black, Gay, & Here to Stay..We ARE Your Family
Last Monday, Jess and I got up early and headed over to Lucy Florence Cafe to meet up with the amazing people from the Jordan Rustin Coalition and the Here to Stay Coalition to join the over 100 people Marching in the GLBT Contingent for the Kingdom Day Parade in Los Angeles. Take a look at some of the pictures from that day:
Here's some press we got:
So Cal Public Radio
Towleroad
It was a super amazing experience for me, not only because I got to march in solidarity next to my bff and my girlfriend, but because most of the reactions of the people on the street were POSITIVE!!!! People were clapping and giving us thumbs up it was so beautiful. I personally only encountered ONE woman who was giving us a thumbs down. I looked straight at her, blew her kisses *and threw imaginary glitter on her* and kept it pushing. I wasn't going to let her slow my roll.
Our friend (and 1/3rd of the Dapper Bois) Kiana made a beautiful video that's going to turn into a short film. Check it out:

Fashion for the Bois: Keil James Patrick
It's no surprise that I love my bois Dapper. And as one of the official Dapper Boi wives, I'm always on the look out for amazing accouterments to complement the special Dapper Boi in my life. I came across Kiel James Patrick on-line and I'm IN LOVE! Their website states:
Check out some of my favorite designs:
"The concept for the Kiel James Patrick brand, and the original KJP bracelets, began when I was in prep school. I used to shop in antique and vintage clothing stores, and rummage through friends' attics, always looking for classic-styled clothing from an older era that was long forgotten.
I ultimately became obsessed with the simplicity and superior craftsmanship of old clothing. This was something you could no longer find in current fashions. Family tartans, English regimental stripes, high quality woven wool from Scotland and Ireland, and jacquard woven silk ties captured my imagination from a fashion design standpoint."
Check out some of my favorite designs:
Aren't they great?! You can even customize the button colors on the bracelets. I love the look of these bracelets and it seems that they're made from quality textiles. An extra plus, they're all made in the USA. Check out all the different designs at http://www.kieljamespatrick.com/
What do you think? Would you buy one of these bracelets? Buy one for the dapper boi in your life?

They each demonstrate leadership potential, whether that is on the streets, online, or within a community based organization.
Brown Bois all have a strong commitment to becoming their best self. They are willing to stretch themselves, learn new things, and be a teacher to others. They might not know how to get where they want to go but they come into this experience with openness to getting closer on their own path. They are looking for a community of brown bois to support them on their own journey and are excited to be a resource to that community in return.
The Brown Boi Project Leadership Retreats are designed for young leaders (35 and under) that have fewer than 7 years of experience in their field and are looking to reinforce their potential with a strong foundation of skills and self-awareness.

Green 2011: COMPOST
One of our New Year resolutions is to try to live a more "Green" lifestyle. We are recycling more, using our stainless steel containers and have started to COMPOST!!! I'm so excited about this (I know, it's kind of weird...) Well, I've found out that if you live in Los Angeles, there's a compost program!
According to the LA Bureau of Sanitation website "Green waste from your yard and garden accounts for approximately 25% of the material being hauled from your home each week. By composting, you can improve your soil for a more productive vegetable or flower garden, and help your community at the same time."
The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation has a FREE Compost Workshop every month and an opportunity to purchase compost bins at a VERY DISCOUNTED price (normally $80 you get it for $20). See the schedule below for workshops and bin sale dates. You can get more info on this program on their website!
Do any of you compost? Do you have any tips for living a more green lifestyle?

Bay Area Casting Call for Staged Reading of Boys That Pray (new play by D'Lo)
Greetings Family and Friends, please read the very detailed and descriptive casting notice and share with people you might think would be interested in this project.
Boys that Pray is a play about masculine women/ folks of color who identify with or whose lived experience reflects that of the transgendered community in their gender presentation. The play tackles issues of masculine voices within the feminist/womanist movement and the lives of those who live under the margin of where the LGBTQ/Queer community conducts all their policy change and equal rights agendas. This is a soul-filled piece on surviving, being examples of surviving and maintaining sanity in an exclusive world where boys that pray are prey to intolerance and close-mindedness. This piece is dedicated to the unspoken emotion attached to the forgotten bodies in this battle to live wholly and holy in society.
Just because “he” is used a lot does not mean that these are boys who consider themselves transgendered.
This play is having it’s staged reading on June 28th, but since the playwright is casting queer masculine-of-center people who might have not had any acting experience, the process is starting early. Many will be asked to join the workshop process and from there, the production team will cast for the stage reading. The actors involved in the stage reading will be different than the actors in the future production in 2012.
Casting Please email: dlocokidla@yahoo.com with the subject “Boys That Pray”
Please send some details about yourself (basically anything you want to share with us) and a picture or headshot.
Where, When and What to Bring will be emailed to you once we hear from you. There will be no sides. We are trying to schedule the audition dates for Saturday Jan 15th, 2011. But please wait for the confirmation email.
NO ACTING EXPERIENCE/PAST PERFORMANCE HISTORY IS REQUIRED.
Any stud/boi/ag/butch/transguy/transman/genderqueer/androgynous (masculine of center) can audition if they think that they fit any of the characters below OR can dance (the piece involves movement and some dance).
NOTE: If you are a masculine female-bodied person who DOES NOT fit any of the roles but would still like to be a part of the workshop process, please also come and audition. There will be other opportunities aside from this play that participants will be able to perform/act etc.
Must be willing to commit to this process in the BAY AREA – rehearsals will mostly be in San Francisco, though sometimes in Oakland.- Take acting and vocal training classes and movement work on certain evenings/weekends throughout the months of January through June.- Commit to a Staged Reading of the work in June.
Dr. Brownbird – White, age 25-45. Must be strong actor to handle playing “older” regardless of actual age. Must also be able to speak like David Attenborough.
The Holy Trinidad:Diggy – Any tone of black/brown skin. (This role has already been cast for the full production, but will not be in the staged reading.) The poet, the romantic, the one who craves to be with the boys as a place of refuge.
Davin - Person of Color. The eldest of the crew. He is silent for the most part with his thought process, is direct in his way of being in this world and battles seeing “appearing to be strong” and “striving to be communicative” as polar opposites.
Ducky – Light or Lighter shade of brown/black skin, but not white passing. The youngest of the crew. He is lighthearted and loves going to the club.
